Ukhiya: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today arrested two alleged drug traffickers and seized 140,000 yaba tablets during a drive along the Ukhiya border in Cox's Bazar. The detainees were identified as Md Nur Islam, 25, son of late Bashir Ahmed of Anjumanpara village in Ukhiya upazila, and Md Hares, 20, son of late Hachan of FDMN Camp-15 in Balukhali.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a special patrol team of Palongkhali Border Outpost (BOP) under Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), acting on a tip-off, spotted two persons entering Bangladesh from Myanmar with bags in the Babuler Gher area, north of Anjumanpara Pani Point, this morning. As the BGB patrol team challenged them, the two men attempted to flee. The patrol team chased and arrested them.
Later, BGB personnel searched the polythene bags carried by the detainees and recovered 140,000 yaba tablets packed in 14 blue-coloured cartons. During preliminary interrogation, the detainees admitted that they had collected the yaba from the Myanmar border and were carrying the consignment to sell it at a higher price, the release said.
Ukhiya Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam said intelligence surveillance and operations have been intensified to identify the source of the yaba consignment, its suppliers and other smugglers involved and bring them to justice. He said the battalion has long been conducting regular operations to ensure border security and prevent drug trafficking, smuggling and other illegal activities, achieving significant success. BGB operations and surveillance will continue to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling along the border, he added.
