Dhaka: Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur: Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) today marked Rokeya Day-2025 with a series of engaging and spirited events on its campus. BRUR Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali commenced the celebration by raising the national flag alongside the national anthem in front of the administrative building.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the day’s festivities continued with Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Professor Dr Masuma Habib inaugurating a vibrant procession. Balloons and festoons were released to signal the start of the march, which culminated at the university’s Independence Memorial Ground after traversing through Shaheed Abu Sayeed Chattar and Modern Mour. The procession saw participation from invited guests, teachers, students, and staff from various departments and residential halls.
The celebration included a discussion at the Independence Memorial Ground at 10:30 am. Professor Dr Masuma Habib attended as the chief guest, with BRUR Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali presiding. The event featured notable figures such as Vice-chancellor of Gopalganj University of Science and Technology Professor Dr Hossain Uddin Shekhor and Bangla Academy Director General Professor Dr. Mohammad Azam.
Professor Dr Masuma Habib emphasized Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s significant contribution to the women’s movement in Bangladesh. She highlighted the increased presence of female students in universities and the expansion of women’s education. Professor Dr Hossain Uddin Shekhor acknowledged Rokeya’s pioneering role in promoting modern education for women in the early 20th century, hoping that Rokeya Day would continue to inspire the new generation.
Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali remarked on the ongoing contributions of women in various fields, aligned with Rokeya’s vision for women’s empowerment and education. He expressed that BRUR, named after Rokeya, would continue to uphold her ideals in building a prosperous Bangladesh.
The event included the unveiling of the book ‘Rokeya-Paath’ and a milad and doa mehfil at the university’s central mosque, further commemorating the occasion.
