Banned BCL Leader Nishi Sent to Jail in Student Assault Case

Dhaka: A court here today sent to jail Benazir Hossain Nishi, joint general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in a case lodged for assaulting students of Dhaka University (DU) during an anti-discrimination student movement. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman passed the order as police produced Nishi before the court after the end of her two-day remand and pleaded to keep her behind bars.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiak had earlier placed Nishi on a two-day remand in the case on January 14. The case documents state that cadres of the Awami League and its front organizations launched an attack on the students on the DU premises on July 15, resulting in injuries to more than 300 students.

DU student Arman Hossain filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on October 28, naming 220 individuals, including BCL president Saddam Hossain, as involved in the incident.
