Thakurgaon: BNP secretary general and local government minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir highlighted the necessity of ensuring the rule of law and justice for Bangladesh’s progress during a civic reception held in his honor at his hometown in this northwestern district. Addressing the event organized by the Thakurgaon Bar Council, he emphasized the critical role of establishing an independent judiciary free from undue influence, efficient public administration, and an effective parliament to sustain democracy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alamgir stated that once democracy is firmly established, development initiatives could be more easily implemented. He stressed that transforming the administration into an efficient and accountable institution and making Parliament more effective would lead to significant democratic progress. Despite acknowledging the challenges ahead, he underscored the importance of strengthening state institutions, noting that strong institutions are the foundation of a stable and enduring democracy.

Alamgir identified drug abuse as a major challenge threatening the country’s future, as it continues to destroy the potential of young people. He remarked that law enforcement alone could not eradicate this menace and called for the collective efforts of families, society, and people from all walks of life to combat the issue.

In terms of local development, the senior minister announced that Thakurgaon is set to host a medical college and a public university, with necessary approvals already in place and implementation underway. He anticipated that the proposed university would begin enrolling students next year. Additionally, Alamgir noted that the Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital has been upgraded from a 250-bed to a 600-bed facility, with steps being taken to reopen the district’s abandoned airport. Efforts are ongoing to promote the district’s development in education, healthcare, employment, and transportation.
