Dhaka: Bangladesh's presidential election will be held on August 20, the country's Election Commission (EC) announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua. Akhtar Ahmed, senior EC secretary, made the announcement at a press conference in Dhaka, stating that nomination papers must be submitted by August 13. According to Nam News Network, the EC has already received the electoral roll consisting of 350 members of parliament from the Parliament Secretariat for the presidential election. The election comes in the wake of Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu's resignation on July 24, which he tendered in a letter to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, citing serious illness. Following the resignation, the Parliament Secretariat confirmed to the media that Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad had begun performing the duties of the president as per the Constitution. In Bangladesh, the presidential election involves members of parliament as voters, in accordance with the country's constitutional framework.
