Jashore:Bangladeshi scientist Professor Dr. Md Javed Hossain Khan has secured a patent for his innovative nano-urea fertiliser, which promises to reduce conventional urea use, lower production costs for farmers, and minimise fertiliser wastage. Developed after years of research, this breakthrough has finally received intellectual property recognition thanks to significant encouragement from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and relevant officials.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Khan began his research on nano-urea in 2018 after studying nanotechnology in Japan. Realising its potential to transform agriculture, he returned to Bangladesh to establish the country's first nano laboratory at Jashore University of Science and Technology. His persistence paid off after several patent application attempts, culminating in the recent recognition of his work.
Dr. Khan explained that nano-urea's technical advantage lies in its liquid form and extremely small particles, which allow plants to absorb nitrogen more efficiently, reducing fertiliser wastage. This innovation not only promises to lessen the chemical burden on soil and water but also offers a substantial economic benefit by potentially reducing fertiliser costs by over 80% for farmers, particularly in rice cultivation.
In terms of commercial production, Dr. Khan has completed a design for a commercial plant and is waiting for industrial collaboration. He has also initiated discussions with the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) and submitted a detailed proposal for large-scale production. Additionally, there is potential for nano-urea to contribute to the national economy by reducing dependence on imported fertilisers, thereby saving foreign currency.
The scientist is also considering seeking international patent protection and sees potential export opportunities in the future, although the immediate focus remains on meeting domestic demand. The support from Jashore University of Science and Technology and the government, particularly during the patent application process, played a crucial role in this achievement.
