Dhaka: The Bangladeshi diaspora in the United States marked the 2nd anniversary of the July uprising in Washington on Saturday, honouring Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey with the ‘July Award of Courage’ for his historic journalistic contributions.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the recognition was presented at the ‘July 36 Celebration’ held in the Washington DC area. Career US diplomat and Atlantic Council Senior Fellow Jon F Danilowicz presented the award on behalf of a coalition of diaspora organisations, including the Center for Society and Culture (CSC), July House Washington, The Bengal Council, Save Bangladesh, and the Bangladeshi American Network for Democracy (BAND), among others.
Tamanna Tahsin, the spouse of Ambassador Mushfiqul, received the honour on his behalf. The event featured virtual participation from Dhaka and the Netherlands. Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, former cultural affairs adviser to the interim government, described July 2024 as a unique event in the history of Bangladesh.
Former Press Secretary to interim government chief adviser Shafiqul Alam and former Special Assistant Faiyaz Ahmed Taiyeb also joined the celebration. Prior to the cultural segment, a panel discussion titled ‘From Grief to Strategy: Healing, Activism, and Policy Engagement’ was hosted by Ahmed Sabit.
Panellists Muneeba Fakhrul of The Bengal Council discussed diaspora activism and countering misinformation using a New Hampshire State Legislature case study. Al Jazeera columnist Shafquat Rabbee addressed strategic engagement with Washington, while Dr Nusrat Rahman of Socchar spoke on nation-rebuilding through collective healing. Golam Mortuza, Press Minister to the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington D.C., spoke on the challenges of narrative building surrounding the revolution.
