Dhaka:Bangladesh will commence their 15th edition of the SAFF Championship campaign against Bhutan at the National Stadium on Thursday, aiming for a triumphant start in their quest for a second regional title after a 23-year gap. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8 pm, following the earlier clash between India and Pakistan at 3.30 pm.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tournament marks a return to Bangladesh after eight years, igniting fresh enthusiasm among local football fans. Bangladesh's head coach, Thomas Dooley, and his team face an immediate challenge of showcasing their strength against a competitive Bhutan team eager to make an impact.
Bangladesh, having finished as runners-up in 2005, have struggled to replicate their past success. Playing on home ground presents both an opportunity and a challenge due to heightened expectations. Coach Dooley believes in the team's capability to compete for the title, dismissing their previous underdog status. Team captain Topu Barman shares this optimism, highlighting the players' determination to win the championship at home.
The team will, however, miss star midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who is unavailable for the opener due to club commitments. This absence places additional pressure on the remaining players, especially the midfielders and attackers, to perform against Bhutan.
Bangladesh's limited preparation, due to the absence of a full-scale practice match during their training camp, adds to the challenge. Meanwhile, Bhutan, under the leadership of head coach Gary Phillips and captain Chencho Gyeltshen, are determined to start their campaign strongly despite disruptions in their training schedule.
For Bangladesh, key strategies will include controlling the midfield, maintaining defensive discipline, and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. The team must also manage the pressure of playing at home to maintain their composure.
Bangladesh is grouped with Bhutan and Sri Lanka in Group A, while Group B includes India, Maldives, and Pakistan. The top two teams from each group will proceed to the semi-finals on November 14, with the final slated for November 17. A strong start is crucial for Bangladesh, with only two group matches to secure a semi-final berth.
