Dhaka: With dedicated efforts from various stakeholders, particularly the government, Bangladesh has successfully sent 9.30 lakh workers abroad with jobs from January to November 2 this year. ‘The trend of overseas employment is satisfactory so far and we are expecting to send more remittance senders with jobs this year,’ stated Mamun Sarder, Director of the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), while speaking to BSS.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the overall manpower export from Bangladesh is expected to increase gradually, with 930,003 workers securing overseas jobs since January 2024. BMET’s Deputy Director (ongoing charge), Mohammad Jahirul Alam Majumder, highlighted the significant increase in remittance inflow, which has been rising for the last nine consecutive months due to increased expatriate income.
Out of the total overseas workers sent in the last nine months, 858,225 were male and 71,778 were female. Bangladesh witnessed a record inflow of remittance in the current yea
r, with expatriates sending US$2.40 billion in October 2024, marking a 21.83 percent increase compared to the same month in the previous year. In October 2023, the country received $1.97 billion, as per central bank data.
From July to October in the current 2024-25 fiscal year, remittances amounted to $8.93 billion, up from $6.87 billion during the same period in the previous fiscal year. September 2024 also saw remittances reaching $2.4 billion.
BMET officials emphasized efforts to increase the number of overseas migrant workers while ensuring their rights and protection. Experts recommend government investment in developing need-based skilled manpower, such as nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers, to meet rising global demand.
The government has established numerous training centers across districts, offering skill development programs to create skillful job seekers. Training includes diplomas in shipbuilding engineering, refrigeration and air-conditioning, general mechanics, electrical machine mainte
nance, auto CAD 2D and 3D, welding (6G), catering, and language courses in Korean, Arabic, Cantonese, and Japanese.
The government has declared the overseas employment sector a ‘thrust sector,’ emphasizing the expansion of job markets for Bangladeshi job seekers abroad.
