Dhaka: Bangladesh has sought support from the United States to facilitate the import of fuel oil from Russia, citing global energy market uncertainties, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Wednesday. He made the remarks after a meeting with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen at his Planning Ministry office in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the Minister revealed that Bangladesh is requesting a waiver similar to the one granted to India by the United States for purchasing Russian oil. This was discussed in the context of the fluctuating global energy market and the challenges it poses, particularly in securing oil and gas supplies.

The meeting also covered potential avenues for enhancing investment, trade, and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States. Strengthening the capacity of various government institutions was also a topic of discussion. The US Ambassador expressed interest in exploring shared economic priorities and noted the ongoing collaboration between the U.S. Treasury Office of Technical Assistance and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Finance.

While addressing reporters, Minister Khosru clarified that no specific decisions were made regarding a trade agreement with the United States. He emphasized that trade agreements involve complex negotiations between countries and that Bangladesh is contemplating how to best utilize such opportunities for national benefit.

In response to inquiries about the government’s strategy if the Middle East crisis extends, the Minister stated that the government is preparing for various scenarios, whether the conflict is short-term, medium-term, or long-term. He assured that plans are being made for each potential situation to safeguard Bangladesh’s energy security.

The government has also approved the purchase of three LNG cargoes as part of efforts to bolster energy security, reflecting Bangladesh’s proactive measures in addressing energy supply challenges.
