Dhaka: Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi organized a reception on Thursday, aiming to garner support from member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for Bangladesh’s re-election to the council.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event featured an address by Senior Secretary of the Shipping Ministry, Mohammed Yousuf, who emphasized the growth of Bangladesh’s maritime transport sector and the critical role its ports play in international trade. A press release detailed these developments, underscoring the strategic importance of Bangladesh’s maritime interests.

Director General of the Department of Shipping, Commodore Md Shafiul Bari, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the nation’s maritime achievements and future priorities. Additionally, Deputy High Commissioner Preeti Rahman shared insights at the event, which was attended by ambassadors and senior diplomats from various embassies. This gathering highlighted Bangladesh’s proactive diplomatic efforts in anticipation of the forthcoming IMO council election.

Bangladesh achieved a remarkable milestone in 2023 by securing a position in the IMO council’s Category ‘C’ with 128 votes in London. This marked the country’s first-ever win in this highly competitive category. The IMO is the United Nations’ sole specialized agency responsible for regulating global shipping standards, covering maritime safety, security, seafaring, and pollution control, all essential to sustaining international trade.

The IMO council, comprising 40 members divided into Categories A, B, and C, acts as the organization’s executive body, influencing global maritime policy. Category C, specifically, ensures the representation of states with unique maritime interests while preserving geographical balance.
