New York:The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously approved a resolution granting Bangladesh an additional three years to prepare for its graduation from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) category, extending the transition period deadline to November 24, 2029.
According to United News of Bangladesh, this extension represents a pivotal diplomatic success for Bangladesh, providing the nation with more time to bolster economic resilience, enhance export competitiveness, and prepare for the eventual cessation of LDC-specific trade preferences and international support measures.
Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Irene Z. Khan, stated that the country's graduation from the LDC category is not merely a response to international processes but an aspiration driven by its people. She emphasized that it is a national imperative, with the government firmly committed to achieving this goal.
The extension request was formally submitted by Bangladesh on February 18, 2026, in light of global economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, evolving trade dynamics, energy and supply-chain risks, and domestic economic challenges. The UN Committee for Development Policy recommended favorable consideration, and on July 21, the UN Economic and Social Council advised the General Assembly to finalize the decision.
To support the negotiations, the Bangladeshi government developed a three-year roadmap outlining specific actions to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition. The extension will allow Bangladesh to address structural vulnerabilities, diversify its exports, improve infrastructure and logistics, and implement essential economic reforms, thereby building a more competitive and resilient economy for its revised graduation date.
