Dhaka:Students, teachers, and parents from 30 schools across 20 districts and 27 upazilas in Bangladesh have joined forces to combat school violence and bullying. This collaborative effort aims to identify practical measures to enhance safety and create a supportive environment for learners.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the initiative is part of activities marking the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, Including Cyberbullying. This year, the theme is 'Every learner safe and well From promise to practice.' UNESCO Dhaka supports the initiative through its Health Promoting School (HPS) programme, in collaboration with the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) and the National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM).
The program emphasizes the prevention of violence and bullying while promoting mental wellbeing, teacher support, digital safety, and a supportive school environment. Professor Dr. Wasim Md Mezbahul Haque, Director General of NAEM, highlighted that well-trained teachers are crucial for building a healthier nation. Under the HPS programme, teachers, education administrators, and managers receive training in health and wellbeing, including mental health, gender-based violence, and psychological first aid.
At Aganagar High School in Keraniganj, Dhaka, discussions focused on harassment faced by girls and online safety issues. Headteacher Husna Ara Begum emphasized that protecting students is a shared responsibility involving teachers, students, guardians, and the community.
In Lalmonirhat, Kaliganj Karim Uddin Public Pilot High School promoted respectful behaviour and safe internet use through banners and placards. The school stressed the need for cooperation among teachers, students, parents, and the community to prevent bullying.
The initiative will culminate in an online teachers' dialogue facilitated by UNESCO Dhaka, where practical ways to address harassment, violence, and cyberbullying will be discussed. These dialogues will inform action plans to enhance school safety and support for learners.
The HPS programme is a global initiative by UNESCO to integrate health and wellbeing into daily school life, involving educators, school leaders, families, and communities to improve educational practices and outcomes.
