Dhaka: The Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) and the election initially set for September 17, 2026, to form the Managing Board of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), have been postponed. Alongside this, the three-member Election Commission tasked with overseeing the election has been dissolved.
According to United News of Bangladesh, this decision was communicated on Thursday via two separate notices signed by the Chairman of the Society, Barrister Md. Abdus Salam. The BDRCS highlighted in a media release on Sunday that the management required additional time to ensure the election process adheres strictly to PO-26 of 1973, the BDRCS election guidelines, and established rules, ensuring transparency, representative participation, and institutional acceptability.
A separate notice declared the dissolution of the Election Commission, which had been formed on August 23, 2026. The postponement of the September 17 election was deemed necessary to facilitate a smooth electoral process.
Farhad Ahammad Khan had been serving as the Chief Election Commissioner, with Mushfiq Ahammad and Dr. Md. Emdadul Haque as Election Commissioners. The Chairman of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Barrister Md. Abdus Salam, stated that the upcoming Managing Board election will be rescheduled to a convenient time to uphold the integrity, credibility, and legitimacy of the electoral process.
The BDRCS will announce a new date for the election and the subsequent steps following necessary consultations with all relevant stakeholders. Barrister Md. Abdus Salam emphasized that this decision aims to strengthen the Society's long-term interests, reputation, organizational stability, and robust democratic framework.
