Dhaka:Bangladesh has reiterated its strong commitment to multilateralism and the need for meaningful reform of the United Nations to effectively tackle global challenges, as stated by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir. This message was delivered on United Nations Day, emphasizing the country's dedication to strengthening democratic governance and promoting accountable institutions under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir highlighted the election of Bangladesh's foreign minister as president of the 81st UN General Assembly as a testament to the government's reinvigorated approach to multilateral engagement. He advocated for a more representative, transparent, and effective United Nations, specifically calling for substantial reforms in the Security Council to address contemporary global issues.

Kobir emphasized the critical importance of multilateralism amid rising geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, and increasing inequalities. He urged the international community to renew commitments to dialogue, peaceful dispute resolution, sovereign equality, and respect for international law.

The state minister also underscored Bangladesh's significant contributions to global peace through its active participation in UN peacekeeping operations. He reaffirmed the country's commitment to enhancing women's roles in peacekeeping and decision-making regarding peace and security.

Bangladesh's collaboration with the UN extends to areas such as sustainable development, disaster resilience, poverty reduction, gender equality, and humanitarian action. Kobir pointed out the ongoing support Bangladesh provides by hosting over 1.2 million Rohingyas displaced from Myanmar and called for continued international assistance for their safe and sustainable return.

Additionally, Kobir stressed the importance of financial, technological, and capacity-building support for developing, least developed, and climate-vulnerable countries to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He extended greetings to the UN and its member states, highlighting the significance of the UN Charter and collective efforts in addressing shared global challenges.
