New York: Bangladesh has reaffirmed unwavering commitment to uphold the constitutional guarantee in promoting and protecting the rights of all citizens and to fully implement the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord. The commitment was reiterated by Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Secretary Md. Abdul Khaleque at the 24th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) in New York.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, an official statement received today highlighted Khaleque's address to the Forum regarding the implementation progress of the CHT Peace Accord. He provided insights into the land management system in the CHT region, which is primarily governed by the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regulation of 1900.
Khaleque emphasized the Bangladesh government's ongoing financial support and allocation for the CHT region to ensure infrastructural development and advancement in education, healthcare, livelihoods, and sports. The statement also reaffirmed Bangladesh's constitutional commitment to preserving the unique culture, heritage, and traditions of its ethnic communities.
During the thematic dialogue on 'Financing of Indigenous Peoples' Work and Participation Across the Multilateral and Regional System,' the Bangladesh delegation recognized the significance of indigenous peoples' meaningful participation in multilateral and regional systems on issues affecting them. The delegation also underscored the importance of adhering to established UN practices and procedures.
The Bangladesh delegation comprised representatives from the Ministry of Land, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and ethnic communities from both the CHT region and plain land.
