Dhaka: In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Bangladesh’s Prison Directorate has embarked on a project to install solar panels on the rooftops of prison buildings across the country. This initiative, which aims to generate between 15 to 18 megawatts of electricity, was formalized through a contract signed with InGen Technology Limited on May 5, 2026. The project will operate under the government’s net metering policy using the OPEX (operational expenditure) model.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the solar panels are set to supply electricity to the national transmission grid via the net metering system while fulfilling the internal power requirements of the prisons. Any surplus electricity generated will be fed back into the national grid, offering potential financial savings for both the prison sector and the government.

Officials highlight that this initiative aligns with the government’s recent directives to boost renewable energy production. Notably, the project requires no financial investment from the government or prison authorities, as it is fully funded through private sector investment.

Authorities have indicated that this project is part of a broader strategy to transform prisons into production-oriented institutions through such multi-dimensional initiatives.
