Barishal: Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, emphasized today that the government is prioritizing disaster preparedness and resilience building to ensure effective disaster management. He stated that the focus has shifted from traditional emergency response and relief efforts to disaster preparedness, risk reduction, resilience building, and sustainable reconstruction.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Azam made these remarks while serving as the chief guest at a discussion at Shilpakala Academy in Barishal, marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDRR). The theme for the day, 'Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,' reflects a global emphasis, including in Bangladesh, on enhancing resilience.
Azam highlighted that disaster management in Bangladesh is evolving into a continuous, institutional, and science-based process. He pointed out the country's vulnerability to climate change, noting that its geographical location, numerous rivers, dense settlements, and the effects of climate change increase the risk of natural and man-made disasters.
The Adviser also mentioned the government's formulation of the National Disaster Management Policy and National Disaster Management Plan in response to these realities. He suggested that cyclone centers in disaster-prone areas would significantly benefit the population and shared that he is conducting visits to assess the current status of these shelters in Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Barguna, and Bhola.
Barishal Divisional Commissioner Md Raihan Kawsar presided over the discussion. The event also featured a colorful rally, where officials from the divisional, district, and police administrations participated. A disaster management rehearsal was held at Bells Park ground to commemorate the day.
Other notable attendees included Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Disaster Management Rezwanur Rahman, Barisal Range DIG Md. Manjur Morshed Alam, Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam, Barishal Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Delwar Hossain, and senior officials from the divisional and district administration.
