Dhaka: Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has emphasized the need for the journalist community to strengthen the Bangladesh Press Council. He urged journalists to focus on the council, highlighting their responsibility in ensuring its progress. His comments came during a courtesy visit by the leaders of the Law Reporters' Forum (LRF) to his office at the Supreme Court.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting with the Chief Justice included LRF Acting President Hasan Jabed, General Secretary Moneruzzaman Mission, and other key members such as Joint Secretary Alamgir Mia and Treasurer Monjur Hossain. The Chief Justice underscored the importance of journalists remaining vigilant to enable the council's advancement.
The government recently appointed Justice A K M Abdul Hakim, a retired judge of the High Court division, as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Press Council. His appointment is for a three-year term on a contract basis, starting from November 27 of the previous year. The council serves as a semi-judiciary body where individuals can file appeals if they feel aggrieved by any news item that violates journalistic norms and ideologies.
