Dhaka: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres has commended Bangladesh for its exceptional hospitality in hosting Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar. He described the country's efforts as "absolutely outstanding" while attending an iftar party hosted by the chief adviser at Hotel InterContinental on Saturday evening.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Guterres expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for its remarkable generosity in providing shelter to over one million Rohingyas. He noted the significant impact this has had on the society, economy, and environment in Cox's Bazar and surrounding areas. Highlighting the global issue of closed borders, Guterres emphasized Bangladesh as a commendable example for other nations to follow.
Guterres acknowledged that the Rohingyas benefiting from Bangladesh's hospitality had no other options available in their lives. He also conveyed his full support for Bangladesh's reform initiatives, stating that these efforts could help the country become a model democracy.
During the event, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus appealed for United Nations support in tackling misinformation. "We need your blessings, we need your support particularly in one thing - misinformation that is killing us," he said. Prof Yunus also remarked that the visit of the UN chief brought joy to the nation, likening it to an early start to Eid celebrations.
