Dhaka:World Teachers' Day is being observed today across the country, with the government recognizing 100 teachers at the national level for the first time.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the celebration forms part of the annual commemoration initiated by UNESCO in 1994. The day is dedicated to honoring teachers and is being marked with various events, including a ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to attend the central celebration organized by the Ministry of Education, where he will serve as the chief guest. This year’s theme, 'Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status, Shaping Our Futures,' underscores the importance of teachers in shaping futures.

For the first time, 100 teachers from various educational levels will receive the 'Guni Shikshak Sammanana' (Outstanding Teachers' Award). These awards are distributed among different categories: 10 for primary level, 20 for secondary, 25 for colleges, 20 for general universities, 10 for medical colleges, three for agricultural universities, three for engineering universities, four for science and technology and other specialized universities, and five under the Prime Minister's special quota.

The Ministry of Education has outlined guidelines for the observance of World Teachers' Day at all educational institutions and at the upazila, district, and national levels. World Teachers' Day was first decided upon at UNESCO's 26th General Conference in Paris in 1993 and observed for the first time in 1994.
