Bangladesh: Bangladesh has decided to join the newly formed World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) initially as an observer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today. In a statement today, the ministry said the government had taken the decision to engage with the Shanghai-based intergovernmental organization, which was established on July 16, 2026, to strengthen international cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, WAICO seeks to deepen global cooperation on AI innovation, promote inclusive development by narrowing the digital divide, support an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for AI advancement, and encourage regulations to ensure the technology remains safe and beneficial for humanity. The organization also aims to strengthen international cooperation and global governance on AI to promote its healthy, orderly and equitable development for the benefit of all.
WAICO was formally established on July 16 when representatives of 29 countries signed its founding agreement in Shanghai. The founding members include China, Kazakhstan, Laos, Pakistan, Russia, and Indonesia, among other countries. United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres attended the signing ceremony alongside representatives of participating countries and international organizations.
According to the founding agreement, WAICO will uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, promote extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, and adopt a people-centred approach in advancing global AI cooperation.
