Dhaka:The government of Bangladesh has set an ambitious target to generate 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power before the next summer season, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and bolster the country's energy security. This plan was revealed by Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, the Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser, during a briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, solar panels are planned to be installed on residential and industrial rooftops as part of this initiative. Additionally, the "Bangladesh Solar Expo 2026" is scheduled to take place on November 3-4 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman slated to inaugurate the event.
The briefing also covered a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Algeria, aimed at facilitating the government-to-government sourcing of liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and petroleum products. Exploration of new gas fields and an expansion of alternative and renewable energy sources remain top priorities for the government amid global energy market volatility.
On the issue of drug control, Dr. Zahed highlighted the intensified nationwide efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat narcotics and illegal firearms. These operations have led to significant seizures of yaba, heroin, phensedyl, and illegal firearms, with the objective of protecting the youth and fostering a drug-free society.
In the health sector, the government is working on introducing an integrated health database and health cards for nearly 20 lakh people. Additionally, to combat food adulteration, registration has been made mandatory for 16 categories of food-related businesses, including roadside food stalls, to address public health risks associated with unhygienic conditions.
The government is also expanding daycare facilities at public offices to support working mothers and is actively protecting fisheries resources. Fortified rice distribution under a food-friendly program is being undertaken to help alleviate poverty.
Dr. Zahed also reported that Durga Puja was celebrated peacefully this year at 33,851 mandaps nationwide, thanks to government assistance, extended holidays, and enhanced security measures. This peaceful celebration reflects the public's confidence in the government's initiatives.
