Dhaka: Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman emphasized on Sunday that Bangladesh must obtain a waiver from the United States to purchase Russian oil, due to US-imposed restrictions on such transactions globally. "Restrictions are in place for all countries regarding the purchase of Russian oil. Therefore, you need to seek a waiver from these restrictions," he stated to reporters following the initial courtesy meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Ambassador Christensen characterized his meeting with Prime Minister Tarique as "very productive," expressing eagerness to collaborate for the mutual benefit of both nations. Meanwhile, Dr. Khalilur refuted claims of any secret deal with the United States, asserting that it is untrue that Bangladesh requires US permission for its dealings.
Dr. Khalilur addressed questions about assertions that Bangladesh needed US permission due to a trade deal with the country, which he categorically denied. He noted that the US sanctions on Russian oil have prompted buyers to explore alternatives. Recently, the US government eased sanctions temporarily to allow India to purchase Russian oil stranded at sea, amidst rising tensions in the Middle East.
The Foreign Minister clarified that there was no discussion about Russian oil during his meeting with the US Ambassador. However, he acknowledged discussions with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright on various confidential matters, while highlighting the US Energy Secretary's commitment to supporting Bangladesh's energy security during trying times.
During the meeting between Prime Minister Tarique and Ambassador Christensen, the conversation centered on enhancing cooperation in energy, trade, and development, as well as continued US assistance for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The Foreign Minister reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to sourcing energy at competitive prices from diverse regions, including India, the Middle East, and the United States.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir was present at the meeting, where the US Ambassador gifted Prime Minister Tarique two photographs and a replica of the White House. The photographs depicted significant historical ties, featuring martyred President Ziaur Rahman with former US President Jimmy Carter, and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia with former US President George HW Bush.
