Dhaka: Despite a spirited effort on their home turf, Bangladesh suffered a 2-1 defeat against Singapore in the Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium. The match, played under the floodlights and in front of passionate home fans, saw Bangladesh putting up a relentless fight until the final whistle blew.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh launched an aggressive attack from the start. Although they showcased impressive football, luck seemed elusive as they left the field empty-handed. Singapore’s first scoring opportunity came in the ninth minute when midfielder Song Uiyoung failed to capitalize on Stewart’s pass, sending the ball out beside the right bar.
In the 16th minute, Bangladesh had a chance to take the lead when Shakil Ahad Tapu’s cross found Rakib inside the small D box. However, Rakib’s missed connection disappointed the home fans. Bangladesh’s defense was tested in the 30th minute, but Mitul Marma’s brilliant save thwarted Singapore’s Ikhsan Fandi’s attempt.
Debutant Shamit
Shome showcased his skills with a precise pass to Rakib in the 31st minute, but the forward couldn’t convert the opportunity. A free kick in the 35th minute saw Hazma Choudhury’s shot sail over the crossbar, leaving Bangladesh without a lead.
Singapore broke the deadlock in the 45th minute as Mitul Marma’s attempt to punch the ball fell to Singapore players. Song Uiyoung capitalized on the opportunity by sending the ball into the net. Singapore doubled their lead in the 58th minute through Ikhsan Fandi’s close-range shot.
Bangladesh responded with renewed vigor, and Rakib Hossain pulled one back in the 67th minute after receiving a through pass from Hamza. The goal boosted Bangladesh’s confidence, but Singapore’s defense held firm, preventing any further comeback attempts.
Earlier, Shamit Shome made his debut for Bangladesh, part of three changes from the team that defeated Bhutan 2-0 in a FIFA International friendly. The midfield saw changes with Shamit and Mohammad Ridoy replacing Jamal Bhuyan and Sohel
Rana, while Shakil Ahad Topu took over the right-back position.
The Bangladesh starting XI featured Shakil Topu, Topu Barman, Md Ridoy, Hamza Choudhury, Rakib Hossain, Mitul Marma, Tariq Rahman Kazi, Fahamedul Islam, Kirmanee, Saad Uddin, and Shamit Shome.
