São Paulo:Dhaka Bangladesh’s exports to 11 South American countries reached $195.17 million in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. This expansion is part of the government's strategy to diversify export destinations through trade fairs and the promotion of non-traditional products.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) indicates that during the period from July to September of FY2026-27, Brazil, Chile, and Peru emerged as the largest markets for Bangladeshi exports. Brazil led with $70.82 million in exports, followed by Chile with $51.87 million, and Peru with $24.24 million. Other notable markets include Colombia, Uruguay, and Argentina.
The figures emphasize the potential of South America as a viable market beyond Bangladesh’s traditional export destinations in Europe and North America. Although readymade garments continue to dominate the export basket, Bangladesh's participation in Home Show Brazil 2026 highlighted the opportunities for products such as jute goods, leather products, and home décor.
Bangladesh's involvement in the Home Show Brazil 2026, held in São Paulo, was supported by the EPB and managed by the Bangladesh Embassy in Brasília. Four companies showcased a variety of products, and the event included business-to-business meetings and a seminar to promote Bangladeshi products to Brazilian businesses and international buyers.
EPB Vice Chairman Mohammad Hasan Arif emphasized the importance of market diversification and reducing reliance on readymade garments. He highlighted the need for exporters to research market demands and consumer preferences to improve commercial outcomes from international exhibitions.
Despite diversification efforts, garments remain the primary export driver, with woven apparel and clothing accessories generating $84.53 million and knitted or crocheted apparel contributing $70.10 million in exports. Other significant exports include pharmaceuticals and footwear, suggesting potential for a broader range of products in the South American market. Brazil and Chile alone accounted for nearly 62.9 percent of the total exports to the region, underscoring their importance as key markets for Bangladesh’s export promotion efforts.
