Dhaka: As expected, Bangladesh earned a facile 2-0 win over Bhutan in the FIFA International friendly match in front of a passionate home crowd at National Stadium in the capital on Wednesday. Goals from Hamza Choudhury and Sohel Rana ensured Bangladesh's commanding victory in the match, which was part of the preparation for their Asian Cup qualifiers match against Singapore scheduled for June 10 at the same venue.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, from the outset, Bangladesh looked sharp, hungry, and in complete control. Dominating possession and dictating the tempo, they consistently pushed Bhutan deep into their own half with a series of attacks. The early breakthrough came following a well-executed corner routine, with skipper Jamal Bhuyan floating a teasing delivery that Hamza Choudhury converted with a perfect towering header, leaving Bhutanese goalkeeper Gyeltshen Zangpo with no chance.
Football returned to the National Stadium after a long 55 months, filling the gallery with the cheers and slogans of fans. Hamza Choudhury's goal on his home debut created waves of excitement. Despite several opportunities, Bangladesh could not increase their lead in the first half, with captain Jamal Bhuyan missing two scoring chances.
Bhutan had a chance to stage a comeback in the 21st minute, but midfielder Wangchuk's attempt was thwarted by Bangladesh defender Topu Barman. Leading 1-0 at halftime, Bangladesh returned to the field more organized, and five minutes into the second half, Sohel Rana doubled the lead with a powerful long-range shot.
Despite Bhutan's late attempts to salvage some pride, Bangladesh's defense remained resolute. Bhutan had a chance to reduce the margin in injury time, but Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma brilliantly saved substitute Jigme Namgyal's close-range effort.
Earlier, Hamza Choudhury and newcomer Fahamedul Islam were included in the starting eleven against Bhutan. Hamza, an English Premier League footballer, had made his debut for Bangladesh against India on March 25 in Shillong. Captain Jamal Bhuyan, who did not play against India, wore the armband in this friendly match.
