Dhaka:Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed his disappointment following his team's defeat in a Test match against the West Indies. Shanto admitted that Bangladesh failed to perform adequately across all departments, particularly in batting. Despite coming into the game with the right intent, the hosts experienced batting collapses in both innings, leading to their downfall.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh lost their last seven wickets for just 59 runs in the first innings after being in a strong position at 213-3. In the second innings, they were reduced to 35-5 before being bowled out for a mere 142. This collapse resulted in setting a target of only 170 runs, which the West Indies chased down with ease, securing an eight-wicket victory.
Shanto noted that while the team's intention and preparation were good, they did not execute well in all three departments, especially in the field. He praised Shadman Islam for his century in the first innings but lamented the middle order's failure to build substantial partnerships, particularly as the wicket offered favorable batting conditions.
Additionally, Shanto commended Nayeem Hasan for his impressive bowling performance upon returning to the side, and also acknowledged the contributions of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Taijul Islam. However, he emphasized the need for improvement in batting, particularly addressing soft dismissals and the lack of runs that had put the team under pressure.
Bangladesh's fielding also came under scrutiny, as they missed several chances and dropped crucial catches throughout the game. Shanto highlighted the need for taking difficult catches and making extra efforts in the field, especially when the team fails to post a competitive total. He concluded by reinforcing the importance of seizing opportunities in cricket to achieve success.
