Chattogram: Pakistan's Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bangladesh and Pakistan will be signed on Sunday to establish a Joint Working Group (JWG) aimed at strengthening bilateral trade relations. "The JWG will be tasked with formulating a comprehensive roadmap to enhance trade and investment between the two countries," Khan said while speaking at a views-sharing meeting with entrepreneurs and businessmen in Chattogram this morning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was held at the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) conference room where Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin stated that the government has been working to build ties with as many countries as possible to expand trade capacity. Sheikh Bashir expressed optimism that local businessmen and entrepreneurs would elevate current trade and investment growth to new heights through enhanced capabilities.
Pakistan's Commerce Minister underscored the importance of collaborative efforts from both nations to promote bilateral trade. He mentioned that several Pakistani business delegations have visited Bangladesh, with more planned to explore potential trade and investment opportunities. Highlighting global trade dynamics, he noted that Pakistani businessmen are eager to strengthen trade relations, and that Pakistan has simplified visa procedures for Bangladeshi businessmen. Direct flights between the two countries are also set to begin soon.
CCCI Administrator Muhammad Anowar Pasha emphasized the need to address the existing trade imbalance, pointing out that Bangladesh imports over $700 million annually from Pakistan, while Pakistani imports from Bangladesh are only $58 million. Discussion participants suggested organizing exhibitions and trade shows to showcase products and boost bilateral trade, proposing that Pakistan could import readymade garments and invest in Bangladesh's education and industrial sectors.
The function was attended by various dignitaries, including Additional Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Dr. Naznin Kawser Chowdhury, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Zia Uddin, and Jute Exporters Association President Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, among others.
