Dhaka: Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) today emphasized the need to further bolster existing trade and economic relations while exploring new areas for mutual cooperation. The discussions took place during a courtesy meeting between Md Khaled Hossain Mahbub, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, and Michael Miller, Ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh, at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting was attended by Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Bangladesh Baiba Zarina and EU Trade Adviser Abu Sayeed Belal. Both parties exchanged views on several issues of mutual interest, highlighting the democratic progress in Bangladesh and the resulting favorable investment environment. Md Khaled Hossain Mahbub noted that the people of Bangladesh have restored their trust in the current government through a free and fair election.
The discussion underscored the importance of making trade and economic relations between Bangladesh and the EU more effective, sustainable, and mutually beneficial. Emphasis was placed on increasing access for Bangladeshi products to the EU market, improving labor laws and workers' welfare, and expanding areas of trade cooperation.
The meeting also touched upon investment prospects in Bangladesh, particularly noting the government's initiatives to ban child labor in the readymade garment sector by providing mid-day meals, educational materials, and sports to encourage school attendance. Efforts to ensure a supportive working environment for women, including maternity leave, were also highlighted.
The EU delegation expressed interest in various issues concerning Bangladesh's Jatiya Sangsad, democratic institutions, and potential areas for trade and economic cooperation. Detailed discussions were held on areas of mutual interest, aiming to enhance bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the European Union.
