Dhaka:Bangladesh: A government-to-government initiative between Bangladesh and Algeria has been established for the long-term importation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertiliser.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced the plan following a meeting with Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani at his ministry office. Under this framework, Bangladesh will undertake the import of LNG and fertiliser from Algeria.
In addition to energy and agricultural imports, Salahuddin Ahmed encouraged Algeria to expand its import of Bangladeshi products, specifically garments and pharmaceuticals. He also suggested that Algeria consider hiring skilled workers from Bangladesh, including doctors and nurses.
Discussions between the two countries also covered topics such as security cooperation, human trafficking prevention, migration management, and the enhancement of economic and commercial relations. Special emphasis was placed on the need for specialised training to boost the professionalism of security forces, alongside joint workshops and legislative support exchanges.
The meeting also highlighted the historical ties between the two nations, with the Algerian ambassador expressing a desire to strengthen the relationship further. Notably, Algeria was the first Arab country to recognise Bangladesh after its independence in 1971.
An invitation from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the Algerian President to visit Dhaka was acknowledged with acceptance. Salahuddin stressed the importance of establishing a mutually convenient date for the diplomatic visit.
Both countries concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to enhancing cooperation in security, trade, and diplomatic relations.
