Dhaka: The interim government has officially renamed two major infrastructures, changing Bangabandhu Bridge to ‘Jamuna Bridge’ and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel to ‘Karnaphuli Tunnel’. This change was formalized by the Bridge Division of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, which issued a notification regarding the new names.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bangabandhu Bridge, which spans the Jamuna River, has been a significant landmark since its opening on June 23, 1998. Despite its official name, many locals had been informally referring to it as the Jamuna Bridge due to its location over the Jamuna River.
Similarly, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, which was inaugurated under the River Karnaphuli in Chattogram on October 28, 2023, will now be known as the Karnaphuli Tunnel. This renaming aligns the tunnel’s name with its geographical setting, reflecting its location under the Karnaphuli River.
