Kushtia:Thousands gathered along the Boruria canal in Kumarkhali upazila to witness a unique banana-tree raft race, a vibrant rural spectacle.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the two-day event featured 16 teams navigating the canal on rafts crafted from banana trees, offering a lively and colorful competition. Organized by the Choraikol Hoytapara Youth Community, the race aimed to revive rural traditions and provide entertainment to locals.
The final, held on Saturday, saw Jhankar Express clinch the championship by defeating Tamim Decorator, with Gram Bangla Express and Bhai Bhai Express finishing third and fourth, respectively. Winning teams were awarded traditional prizes, with the champion receiving a large goat and the runner-up a smaller goat.
Spectators relished the rare rural entertainment, with Selina Begum expressing joy at the novel experience. Veteran local Mohammad Aktaruzzaman shared his hopes for the race to become an annual event.
Organizing committee member Abu Kawsar Apu highlighted the event's success in drawing a large crowd, promising future races to continue the tradition. The race not only entertained but also fostered community spirit, according to organizers and locals.
