Khulna: Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Rakibul Islam Bakul has stated that citizens are now free from the fear of enforced disappearance following the rise to power of the current government led by Tarique Rahman. He remarked on the past climate of fear that lasted for 17 years, during which enforced disappearances and killings were reportedly used to silence the public.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bakul made these comments while distributing financial assistance cheques to families affected by enforced disappearances, killings, and inhumane torture from previous administrations. He emphasized that the newfound freedom people experience has come at a significant cost, borne by countless individuals and their families.
Bakul clarified that the financial aid provided was not a charitable act but rather a rightful claim for the families of victims. The event also featured speeches from Khulna Zila Parishad Administrator and acting member secretary of District BNP SM Monirul Hasan Bappi, as well as Chief Executive Officer Mominur Rahman.
A total of Taka 7,36,000 was distributed among 73 beneficiaries, which included 23 martyr families and 50 affected families. The distribution event was attended by several dignitaries, including Azizul Bari Helal, MP, Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Monju, Metropolitan BNP President Advocate Shafiqul Alam Mona, General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin, District DAB President Rafiqul Islam Bablu, and other local political, social, and professional leaders.
