Police have detained a Hindu youth from Amurbunia village of Bagerhat after his alleged abusive Facebook post against Islam triggered an attack in his house and a nearby temple.

The detainee has identified as Kowshik Bishwash, 23, a mason from Amurbunia village in Morrelganj upazila of the district.

Around 8.30pm on Monday, some 250 to 300 agitated Muslims vandalised his house and a nearby temple, said KM Ariful Haque, superintendent of Bagerhat Police.

“The village is home to 56 Muslim and 54 Hindu families. Additional police force has been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation,” said SP Ariful.

“Kowhshik who had been living in India for the past three years, returned home a week ago. He was a follower of Bharatiya Janata Party in India. He was previously jailed for an offensive online post on West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” he added.

Abdur Rahim Bacchu, chairman of Nishanbari Union Parishad, said that “a tense situation prevails in the village”.

Two separate cases one against the Hindu youth for hurting religious sentiments and another in connection with vandalising a temple were filed against 80-90 people, including naming 20, said the SP.

Inspector SM Ashraful Alam, chief coordinator (media cell) of Bagerhat District Police said they have arrested 17 people for vandalising the house and the temple. “Operation is on to arrest the other accused.”
