Amman:Axiata Berhad Group CEO Nik Rizal Kamil emphasized the attractiveness of Bangladesh as an investment destination, citing strong market fundamentals and a growing digital economy. However, he stressed the necessity for policy predictability, a sustainable industry cost structure, and the ability to secure long-term returns for investors.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Axiata, a Malaysian telecoms and technology group, has a significant presence in Bangladesh through its mobile operator Robi and tower company Edotco. The group, serving over 190 million customers across Southeast and South Asia, has invested in Bangladesh for nearly three decades, reflecting their confidence in the country's future growth potential.
Kamil noted the importance of policy predictability and a balanced approach to spectrum management as key factors for attracting investment. He highlighted that a more sustainable spectrum pricing could accelerate connectivity investments and improve service quality, ultimately benefiting consumers, businesses, and the broader economy.
The CEO welcomed the Bangladeshi government's decision to remove the SIM tax, viewing it as a positive step towards digital inclusion and a strong signal to investors. He underscored the importance of aligning with global best practices in areas such as spectrum management, taxation, and regulation to enhance the sector's competitiveness.
Robi, described as a market leader in the data business, aims to maintain its lead by ensuring comprehensive 4G coverage across Bangladesh. While the 5G rollout is still in early stages, Kamil emphasized the need for a demand-driven approach with continued collaboration between industry stakeholders.
Beyond traditional telecom services, Axiata has expanded its technology portfolio with ventures like Boost in fintech, ADA in data analytics, and Axonect in software solutions. This diversification is part of the group's strategy to transform into a technology-oriented business, focusing on operational efficiency and AI-driven initiatives to create long-term value.
