Cumilla: A woman and her minor son were killed, and three others sustained injuries in a tragic collision between a CNG autorickshaw and a covered van in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla on Wednesday afternoon. The accident unfolded at approximately 2:45 pm in the Baniapara area.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the victims were identified as Rowshan Ara Begum, 38, and her son Yamin, 6. Rowshan Ara was the wife of Didar Mia, a shoe factory businessman from Jadda village in Muraddnagar upazila. The unfortunate incident took place on the Cumilla-Sylhet regional highway, as confirmed by Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman of Debidwar Police Station.
The injured individuals were named as Md Tajul Islam, 73, Rowshan Ara's father, his wife Minu Ara Begum, 65, and the autorickshaw driver, Jisan, 35. Police reports, quoting local residents, reveal that four family members were returning to Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria in a CNG-run autorickshaw after visiting a relative in the Cumilla Cantonment area. As their vehicle reached Baniapara, it collided with an oncoming covered van, resulting in Rowshan Ara's immediate death at the scene.
Local residents promptly rescued the injured and transported them to the Upazila Health Complex, where medical professionals declared Yamin dead. The other injured parties, including Rowshan Ara's parents and the autorickshaw driver, are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.
Tajul Islam recounted that the covered van struck their autorickshaw from behind, leading to the deaths of his daughter at the scene and his grandson later at the hospital. Police have since recovered the bodies and returned them to the family following the completion of legal procedures, as stated by the Officer-in-Charge.
