Dhaka: Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan today emphasized the parallel socio-political contexts from which both the Sepoy-People’s Revolution of 1975 and the July Uprising of 2024 emerged. Speaking at a roundtable discussion titled ‘From November to July: From Revolution to Revolution’ organized by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club, he highlighted the interconnected nature of these historical events. The discussion marked the observance of National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Asif Mahmud remarked on the similarities between the two events, noting the consistent socio-political conditions that spurred both movements. He attributed the failure to establish a just and functional state post-independence as a common background for both the 1975 and 2024 events. Mahmud pointed out that post-independence leaders engaged in corruption and mismanagement, which resulted in the context for the 1975 revolution and re-emerged under similar conditions in 2024.
The adviser underscored the significance of Bangladesh’s development post-1975, emphasizing the country’s efforts in building institutions, strengthening the military, and asserting its regional role. He also acknowledged the contribution of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, who initiated welfare-oriented politics and helped build a strong state structure, laying the foundation for current political and policy discourses.
The roundtable discussion also covered the evolving political landscape of Bangladesh and the actions of various parties following the July Uprising. The session was conducted by the President of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Rifat Rashid, with participation from Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju, poet and political thinker Farhad Mazhar, Dr. Abdul Latif Masum, and former army officer Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Hasinur Rahman.
