Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) has issued a directive to law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts in capturing the ‘godfathers’ behind drug trafficking. “Not only the carriers, but also the godfathers of the drug trafficking must be captured to protect the next generation, family, society, and the state from ruining,” he stated. This statement was made during a meeting focused on Rohingya infiltration, camp management, and drug control.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting was organized by the Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner’s office at the regional center of BIAM Foundation. The Home Adviser emphasized the importance of changing the mindset of involved officers and employees while working with utmost sincerity to maximize the results of anti-drug operations. He urged, “All drug traffickers must be exposed to justice,” highlighting the issue of drug infiltration in Cox’s Bazar alongside Rohingya refugees. Jahangir called for unity among the residents of Cox’s Bazar to remain vigilant against drug abuse.
The Home Adviser further noted that mob violence can be curbed if public awareness is raised and assured that no mercy will be shown to perpetrators of mob violence and extortionists. He also cautioned against taking the law into one’s own hands, warning that ‘tough action’ would be taken against such actions.
The meeting was attended by Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Abdul Hafiz, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin, and Police Superintendent Saifuddin Shahin, among others. Representatives from the army, navy, air forces, police, RAB, BGB, Department of Narcotic Control (DNC), and the Home Ministry were also present.
