Dhaka: Bangladesh Army has arrested one person for his involvement with the mob violence in front of the residence of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K M Nurul Huda on June 22. The individual, identified as Md. Hanif, was apprehended and subsequently handed over to police authorities on June 23, as per an ISPR press release issued today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bangladesh Army emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order, declaring its intent to take all necessary actions to prevent any recurrence of mob violence in the country. The incident in question occurred at House 29, Road 1/A in Uttara Sector-5, where a group of 6 to 7 individuals surrounded Nurul Huda around 7 pm. During the altercation, the former CEC was physically assaulted, forced to wear a garland made of shoes, and the event was live-streamed on Facebook in the presence of police.
The ISPR release noted that a lawsuit had been filed against the former CEC, which was reported to the Uttara Paschim police station at 7.20 pm. Although police arrived at the scene, the harassment of Nurul Huda took place in their presence. Eventually, the police managed to control the situation and placed the former CEC in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The army initiated a drive against those responsible for the mob violence after the incident was brought to the attention of the concerned army camp. As part of this operation, Md. Hanif was arrested for his involvement in the violence. The ISPR stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend others connected to the incident.
