Dhaka: Members of the Bangladesh Army detained 13 BNP activists on suspicion of attempting to seize two polling stations in Dhaka’s Ashulia early Thursday. The detainees were later handed over to Ashulia police station, where they are currently in custody.
According to United News of Bangladesh, SI Saymon Sheikh, duty officer of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed the detention of the activists. Around 12:30 am, an army patrol team conducted an operation at the Notun Nagar New Model School and College polling station in Ward No. 5 of Dhamsona Union, resulting in the detention of nine BNP activists. The individuals detained are identified as Abdur Rahman, Bashir Uddin Bepari, Mohammad Sarwar, Md Julhas Uddin, Md Sumon, Md Sujan, Md Shahinur Islam, Akhtar Hossain’s son Md Sumon, and Danez Ali Sheikh’s son Md Nurul Islam. They are reported to be supporters of BNP-nominated candidate Dr Dewan Mohammad Salauddin Babu.
In a separate operation conducted simultaneously at the Nalam polling station in Ward No. 9 of Dhamsona Union, four more individuals were detained. They are Md Montu Mia, Md Jewel Mia, Kabir Hossain, and Rakib Hossain, who are also said to be supporters of the same candidate. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the matter, and after verification, necessary legal actions will be taken as decided by higher authorities, according to SI Saymon Sheikh.
