Dhaka: Bangladesh Army today expressed optimism that the law and order situation will stabilize following the planned national election in February, which would facilitate their return to the barracks.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, 'Like the country's people, Bangladesh Army is expecting a free, fair, impartial, and festive election as per government outline,' stated Lieutenant General Md Mainur Rahman, general officer commanding of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC), during a media briefing at Dhaka Cantonment.
Rahman affirmed the army's commitment to assist fully in the election process, indicating that preparations are underway in alignment with the electoral roadmap. 'We believe the election will solidify the country's stability, normalize the law and order and then the army could go back to cantonments,' he added. The army is currently deployed to support civil power.
Rahman emphasized the necessity of a free, fair, and acceptable election for the country's peace, stability, and progress. 'The army is ready to provide maximum cooperation and fulfill its responsibilities in achieving that goal,' he assured. He also disclosed plans to deploy 90,000 to 100,000 soldiers nationwide during the elections, a figure notably higher than previous election periods.
Addressing concerns about misinformation, Rahman stated that certain groups were propagating false narratives to undermine the army's integrity. He reassured the public of the army's loyalty and unity, urging people to disregard social media propaganda and work together. 'Our army members are more united than ever before, and our sense of brotherhood is stronger,' he said.
Despite being deployed for the past 15 months, Rahman highlighted the army's unwavering professionalism and commitment to national service, acknowledging the challenges faced during continuous field deployment. He expressed hopes that a successful election would allow the army to resume its regular training and modernization activities.
Rahman reiterated the army's primary responsibility during peacetime is preparation for war, stating, 'We always say- 'We train as we fight,' meaning we train the way we fight.' He noted that field deployment had somewhat hindered training activities but affirmed the army's steadfastness in duty.
Reflecting on the difficulties of maintaining law and order over the past 15 months, Rahman acknowledged the adverse situations faced by troops, which are uncommon for Bangladesh. He stressed the army's readiness to serve the nation, emphasizing its role under government direction and its integral part in the state.
'The army has always stood by the people in any disaster or challenging situation and will continue to do so in the future,' Rahman stated. He highlighted the army's demonstrated capabilities in internal security, disaster management, infrastructure development, and international peacekeeping.
The briefing was attended by Brigadier General Dewan Mohammad Monzur Hossain and Brigadier General Md Mustafizur Rahman, who also addressed questions from journalists.
