Dhaka: Colonel Md. Shafiqul Islam of the Military Operations Directorate (Staff Colonel) today emphasized the Bangladesh Army's unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order and safeguarding the nation's sovereignty while supporting the general public. He made these comments during a press conference at Dhaka Cantonment, as detailed in an ISPR press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Colonel Shafiqul highlighted that, under the directions of the army chief, army personnel are actively engaged in 62 districts, including the Char areas, working tirelessly to uphold law and order. This involves coordination with relevant ministries of the interim government, law enforcement agencies, local administration, media, and the general public. He further mentioned that the army is prepared to take strict measures against activities threatening life and property, mob violence, and public distress.
During a Q and A session with journalists, Col. Shafiqul noted that while the army has not received official instructions regarding the upcoming national elections, it stands ready to fulfill electoral duties as per government directions. He also underscored the army's proactive role in curbing mob violence, citing the recent intervention in Rangpur that helped stabilize the situation.
Col. Shafiqul also recounted the army's active involvement during Eid-ul-Azha, where members patrolled key transport hubs and set up check-posts to regulate bus speeds. He praised the army's efforts, including the recovery of over Taka 35,26,233 from overcharged passengers, attributing these successes to the army's dedication and integrity.
Addressing an incident involving the beating of a flag seller during an international football match, Col. Shafiqul expressed regret and reported that compensation was provided to the affected individual. He also mentioned the heightened vigilance of the BGB and Coast Guard along the India-Myanmar border to prevent potential push-ins, which includes increased patrols and intelligence surveillance.
In recent operations, the army has arrested several top terrorists, recovering a significant cache of illegal weapons and ammunition. Since August, they have seized 9,667 illegal weapons and over 286,754 rounds of ammunition, arresting a total of 15,262 individuals involved in various crimes. Special operations led to the capture of notorious terrorists, including Subrata Bain and Mullah Masud, leaders of the Seven Star group, along with their associates and weapons.
These efforts have brought a sense of relief and security to local communities, as the army continues to target suspected criminal activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of the public.
