Los angeles: Pop star and actress Ariana Grande has officially launched the Brighter Days Ahead Foundation, consolidating her years of private charitable efforts into a public initiative focused on LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive health, immigrant rights, and mental health.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the foundation, launched in May, builds on Grande's history of supporting these causes through donations and fundraising. Previously, she donated to England's Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, offered concert proceeds to nonprofit organisations, funded a holiday gift drive for transgender youth, and initiated a $3 million fundraising campaign for transgender young people in 2022.
Grande's philanthropic adviser Shauna Nep stated that the foundation's launch comes at a time when financial support for many of these causes is declining amid rising political and social opposition. This summer, Grande is using her Eternal Sunshine Tour to raise awareness and funds for the foundation. National and local nonprofit organisations are highlighted on arena screens before each concert, and fans who donate are entered into a sweepstakes to win a trip to her final tour performance in London.
Tour proceeds will eventually be shared among local nonprofit groups, although initial grants have been funded directly by Grande, according to a foundation spokesperson. By creating the Brighter Days Ahead Foundation, Grande is channeling her public influence into organised philanthropy, a move experts say is enhanced by social media, allowing celebrities to promote charitable causes more effectively.
One of the organisations benefiting from the foundation is Trans Lifeline, a crisis hotline for transgender individuals. Grande has provided $125,000 to the nonprofit, aiding in the restart of a microgrant programme that distributed $100,000 directly to transgender people across the United States. This funding also supported improved benefits for the hotline workers, increasing the organisation's visibility and public support.
Although Grande hesitated to establish a formal foundation due to concerns about being perceived as image-building, Nep mentioned that a structured foundation enables her to support nonprofit organisations more strategically and collaborate with other funding partners. The Brighter Days Ahead Foundation is a fiscally sponsored project of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, which assists celebrities in creating charitable initiatives.
The foundation's major funding programme, Protect and Defend, supports organisations addressing legal and policy issues affecting transgender youth, immigrants, and reproductive rights. The grants primarily support grassroots groups with limited access to mainstream funding sources. Grande has been a public advocate for these issues, donating $250,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2019 and speaking openly about her experiences with PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Experts compare Grande's philanthropic approach to that of Elizabeth Taylor and Elton John, who established charitable foundations after becoming involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Anne Aslett, CEO of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, noted that successful celebrity philanthropy requires more than public support, emphasizing the need for a strong organisational structure to achieve lasting impact.
