Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has shown remarkable efficiency by disposing of 1,997 more cases than the number filed during the initial eight months of 2026. This achievement highlights a significant improvement in the judicial process, reflecting the court's ability to manage and resolve cases efficiently.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a press release issued by the Supreme Court's Public Relations Officer, Md Shafiqul Islam, detailed that from January 1 to August 31, 11,136 cases were resolved while 9,139 new cases were initiated. This resulted in a surplus of 1,997 cases disposed of over those filed. The data further shed light on the trend over the past years, with the Appellate Division handling 6,859 cases in 2021, 5,406 in 2022, 5,349 in 2023, 5,312 in 2024, and 7,553 in 2025. On average, about 6,096 cases were concluded annually during this five-year span.
The statistics also revealed a fluctuating pattern in the number of new cases filed annually: 7,806 in 2021, a significant leap to 29,162 in 2022, 11,938 in 2023, 29,915 in 2024, and 17,984 in 2025. As of the first eight months of 2026, 9,139 new cases had been filed, indicating a potential leveling off compared to previous years.
Additionally, the High Court Division has also shown commendable performance, disposing of 87,596 cases within the same period in 2026. This marks a monthly average disposal of approximately 10,950 cases, signifying substantial progress in handling the backlog. Comparatively, the High Court Division resolved 23,654 cases in 2021, 87,474 in 2022, 74,278 in 2023, 38,297 in 2024, and 55,756 in 2025. The current year's figures surpass the disposal numbers for any entire year in the preceding five years.
