London: Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and Joint Editor of the Daily Ittefaq, Anwar Aldin, held a meeting with Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, at his London office on Wednesday. During the meeting, Anwar Aldin highlighted the advancements made by the British-Bangladeshi community in areas such as education, leadership development, and civic engagement throughout the United Kingdom.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Lutfur Rahman welcomed Anwar Aldin to London, acknowledging his impactful work in investigative journalism. Rahman, the first elected Mayor from the Bangladeshi diaspora in Tower Hamlets, expressed optimism about the strengthening of democracy in Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of fair and transparent elections to uphold the people's voting rights.
Rahman also stressed the necessity of safeguarding the fundamental rights of Bangladesh's citizens, including freedom of expression, law and justice, education, and healthcare, against any form of obstruction or discrimination. Additionally, he pointed out the strategic importance of harnessing Bangladesh's human resources as a national asset, similar to countries like China and India.
As the first non-white elected Mayor in the United Kingdom, Lutfur Rahman leads the third-largest economic area in the UK, valued at approximately 40 billion pounds, with a population of about 350,000. His jurisdiction includes significant locations such as Canary Wharf, Bangla Town, and the historic Tower of London, contributing to London's cultural, historical, and economic landscape.
Since assuming office for a third term, Rahman has launched several innovative public welfare programmes over the past three years. During the meeting, his Strategic Advisor (Ethnic Media), Muhammad Zubair, along with Mayor's Office Media Chief Georgie Robertson, Policy Advisor Sun Henry, and other officials, extended greetings to BSS Chairman Anwar Aldin.
The meeting was also attended by BNP Central Committee's International Affairs Secretary Anwar Hossain Khokon, young entrepreneur and lecturer Dr. Md. Ataur Rahman, and community leader Bappi Hossain, among others. Anwar Aldin expressed satisfaction with the discussions with Mayor Lutfur Rahman, focusing on the progress of the British-Bangladeshi community in education, leadership development, and social participation.
