Dhaka: Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the platform that led the 2024 July Uprising, today paid tribute at the mausoleum of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the occasion of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Leaders and activists of the platform, led by its President Rifat Rashid, placed floral wreaths at the grave this morning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, after placing the wreaths, Rifat Rashid addressed reporters, stating that the homage was part of the organization’s vision for a “new political settlement” that transcends partisan lines. Rashid emphasized that their respect for Ziaur Rahman reflected an inclusive spirit, acknowledging his role in strengthening Bangladesh’s democratic foundation through a historic referendum.
Rashid further elaborated on the importance of honoring national leaders irrespective of political differences. He highlighted the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s commitment to bridging perceived gaps between the armed forces and the people, describing the creation of artificial divisions as a “dangerous fascist conspiracy.”
The platform leader underscored the significance of November 7 as a reminder of the unified goal shared by students, the public, and the military to protect Bangladesh’s independence and ensure the safety of its people. He advocated for the distinction between referendums and national elections, emphasizing the need for transparency and independence in both processes.
Rashid expressed disappointment with the Consensus Commission’s recommendations, pointing out the lack of consultation with key stakeholders such as students, injured activists, and families of July martyrs. He called for true justice through listening to those who sacrificed the most during the July Revolution.
In his concluding remarks, Rifat Rashid urged the interim government and political parties to prioritize dialogue and national unity, stressing the importance of coordination in finding the right path for the nation. He reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to justice for the injured and the families of martyrs, as well as preserving the aspirations of the July Revolution.
