Narayanganj:The historic Amlapara Sarbajanin Puja Mandap, with its 144-year-old tradition, has infused the industrial city with the rustic charm of rural Bengal. The mandap celebrates motherhood through traditional household items and natural materials, juxtaposed against the backdrop of modern urban life.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the mandap is adorned with bamboo trays, mats, palm-leaf fans, earthen plates, clay pots, and cowrie shells, offering a distinctive expression of Bengali heritage. These intricate decorations narrate stories of a mother's love, sacrifice, and nurturing care, adding a unique emotional depth to the Sharadiya Durga Puja celebrations.
As visitors make their way through Amlapara Lane, they are met with a striking display centered on the theme of motherhood, which extends from the entrance to the idol's altar. This unique arrangement has attracted widespread attention across Narayanganj in anticipation of the festival.
The central theme for this year's celebration is 'Ma' (Mother), which not only highlights Goddess Durga but also honors the human mother who nurtures her child with boundless affection and sacrifice. The mandap's walls and sections portray various aspects of a mother's life and dedication, featuring educational messages that encourage children to heed their mothers' guidance.
Organizers spent nearly three months completing the intricate decorations, dedicating the first two months to preparations in an open field before finalizing the mandap over the last month. Sani Saha, the treasurer of the Amlapara Sarbajanin Puja Udjapan Committee, noted their continuous effort to introduce something new each year and expressed optimism for a joyous festival atmosphere.
Narayanganj is celebrated as a city of communal harmony, with a mosque and madrasa located next to the mandap. Sani Saha highlighted the peaceful coexistence during the festival, with the neighboring Muslim community extending considerable cooperation and the organizers pausing musical instruments during prayer times.
Security measures include CCTV surveillance and the presence of police, Ansar members, and around 150 volunteers to ensure the celebrations proceed smoothly. Diptoo Debnath, a local resident, shared his anticipation for the mandap's distinctive decorations each year, praising the current theme and exterior lighting.
Prabir Kumar Saha, president of the Amlapara Sarbajanin Puja Udjapan Committee, reflected on the long-standing tradition of celebrating Durga Puja at the mandap, initiated by their forefathers. This year's theme, 'Ma,' pays tribute to motherhood and emphasizes stories of maternal sacrifice and love.
The effort to reconnect urban residents with their cultural roots has drawn hundreds to Amlapara, where the mandap's message of maternal love and sacrifice resonates deeply, adding emotional appeal to the Durga Puja festivities.
