Dhaka: Algerian Envoy to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani today met Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain at his office at the Secretariat. During their meeting, both parties concurred on the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance mutual cooperation in the shipbuilding industry.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sakhawat Hussain, who also serves as the Labour and Employment Adviser, emphasized the strong ties between Bangladesh and Algeria, expressing readiness to deepen this relationship. He noted Bangladesh’s longstanding connection with Algeria and its eagerness to strengthen these bonds further.
The Algerian envoy highlighted his government’s interest in establishing a productive partnership with Bangladesh, recognizing the nation’s accomplishments in the shipping industry. Algeria is keen to import ships and other maritime vessels of international quality produced in Bangladesh.
Saidani proposed signing an MoU aimed at fostering development within the maritime sector. Hussain welcomed this proposal, noting that Bangladesh is building international-standard ships at both public and private levels, which are being exported globally. He further mentioned the Khulna Shipyard’s international reputation and the Marine Academy’s role in developing skilled manpower for the sector.
The adviser invited the ambassador to visit key maritime locations in Bangladesh, including Chattogram, Mongla, and various shipyards, dockyards, and the Marine Academy. He also encouraged the Algerian government to invest in Bangladesh’s burgeoning maritime sector.
Saidani assured Hussain that the Algerian government is already working on enhancing cooperation in this area. He invited the adviser to visit Algeria and expressed gratitude for Bangladesh’s dignified celebration of May Day.
The shipping adviser sought Algeria’s backing for Bangladesh’s candidacy in the Category-C election of the International Shipping Agency (IMO) Council for the 2026-2027 term, to be held in London in December 2025. The Algerian ambassador reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh.
Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs BM Jamal Hossain and senior officials from the Ministry of Shipping were present at the meeting.
