Dhaka: Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani today emphasized the importance of enhancing educational cooperation between Bangladesh and Algeria through initiatives such as student exchange programs, inter-university partnerships, and academic collaborations. He made this call as the Algerian embassy in Dhaka marked the 69th anniversary of National Student Day, a significant event in Algeria’s history of independence.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the commemoration began with the hoisting of the Algerian national flag, followed by a moment of silence in remembrance of the martyrs. The Algerian national anthem was played on the embassy premises as part of the ceremony. During his speech, Ambassador Saidani paid tribute to the courageous Algerian students who, on 19 May 1956, paused their academic pursuits to join the national liberation movement. This act of defiance showcased their unparalleled patriotism and courage.

The ambassador highlighted the historical significance of the day, recalling how the General Union of Algerian Muslim Students (UGEMA) urged students to prioritize national duty over academic achievements with the powerful slogan: ‘Diplomas do not make better corpses’. He described the student movement as a strategic and patriotic act that reinforced the National Liberation Army (NLA) and united Algerians in their quest for freedom.

Ambassador Saidani also noted the progress Algeria has made since gaining independence, particularly in literacy and higher education, highlighting education as a key element of Algeria’s national development. Addressing the students from Bangladesh and Algeria present at the event, he encouraged them to draw inspiration from the sacrifices made by Algerian students in 1956 and to dedicate themselves to education and nation-building.

He further expressed hope that this inspiration would motivate students to contribute to the development of both countries and strengthen bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Bangladesh. These nations are seen as pillars of the Islamic Ummah, and their educational collaboration could be enhanced through inter-university exchanges and student programs.

The event was attended by diplomats, students from both Bangladeshi and Algerian universities, and invited guests. They praised the shared commitment of both nations to education, development, and solidarity.
